OK...OK...OK....I, too, must own up to my having "fallen off the Blogger wagon" lately. Mea culpa.
So, where are we now? May was just crazy wet here -- something like rain 16 out of 18 days for a while, so gardening and yard work had to wait until things dried out a bit. By then, everything was 4 feet tall...both plants AND weeds. And, the powdery mildew -- Oh, the humanity! My poor garden phlox have taken it hard, and I don't think there's enough spray in the world to save them. The veggie garden was just too wet to plow (hmmm..."Can't dance, and it's too wet to plow" ?) or plant until just the past couple of weeks -- although I did get 8 different varieties of tomatoes in the ground before the flood. I've added yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, and both slicing and pickling cucumbers just in the past few days, as well as planted beans and cantaloupe from seed.
I splurged and bought several really nice pots for around the house, mostly due to the influence of my friend Jennifer, who is maniacal about the 20 or so big pots she does (along with border beds filled with both annuals and perennials) in her backyard -- which is essentially a beautifully landscaped swimming pool & hot tub. It's gorgeous, and I've given in to her evil influence...a little.
And, of course, there's the mowing. I pay a guy to mow and trim and blow around the house, but I mow and trim all the rest of the ranch. Fortunately, my neighbor Clay lets me use his big John Deere ZTR riding mower. I'm most proud of myself for being able to start the gas powered trimmer all by myself, AND handle changing the line as need be. Mastering the chainsaw is next.
Been shuffling furniture from Gran & Pap's to my place, and things I don't want anymore TO their house for future sale. Hoping to 'redecorate' the living/dining rooms this year (new paint color, furniture and rugs) as time and money and energy allows. What's there is a huge reminder of the past....that needs to go away. Think along the lines of a spicy-terra cotta-amber-pumpkin-fall-chocolate-Morocco-luxe vibe. I think. At the same time, there's some concern about how to tie that color palette to the existing chartreuse-orange-white-brushed nickel thing already established in the kitchen (Jennifer is a former interior decorator...and these things tend to 'concern' her much more than they do me!).
And, the Pack. They're all good. We've started using a different flea med that is supposed to also repel mosquitoes and ticks, which is a good thing. They cornered a big bull snake in their enclosure the other day -- I was digging grass out of the butterfly garden, when they all started barking in a tone that let me know something was afoot. I knew they had 'found' something, as they were all three side by side, having cornered whatever it was in the SE corner of the pen, up against the barn. Sure enough -- big ol' snake. I kept trying to coax them away, or at least stop barking at it, but I guess they thought they were protecting me. The barking continued for the better part of an hour -- well, Honey gave up first, then Gator at some point, but Freckles was NOT going to let it go. So, my final ploy was to bring out the big bones, and it was finally quiet again. The cats are fine, too...except Thelma Rae has brought 3 or 4 skinks and a couple of birds INTO the house this spring. Have found 2 carcasses...so far....
So, it's been nearly a year since Pap went to that big trout stream in the sky. I decided to mark the occasion by ordering a Stuart pecan tree to plant (that tree at the house is a Stuart). It arrived this past weekend, is about 6 feet tall in the pot (isn't it cool that you can order a tree and UPS will deliver it???) and seems very healthy. Gator and I will plant it Sunday.

Miss ya, Dad.
So, let's all have a great summer, remember to wear your sunscreen, laugh hard and often, get dirt under your fingernails, and love the ones you're with!
